Math Anxiety – Is Fear of Failure Affecting Your Child’s Math Work? The First Article of Three

By Ann LaRoche What is it about math that causes such pain and anxiety, turmoil and fighting, tears and anger? Is it math or our own fears of failure? Do we have a fear that our child wont be good at math because we are not very good at math ourselves? The problem is Math Anxiety. Fortunately math anxiety has nothing to do with our ability to do math. Better still, our ability to do math has nothing to do with our genes. In other words, math is a basic skill that everyone can become proficient in. Its like being able to read. No one would say that they are not good at reading, but it is commonly accepted that some are good at math while others are not. What is the real fear behind math anxiety? It is the fear of getting the wrong answer! Wrong answers mean failure. Failure is to be avoided at all cost. This is our cultural belief. This is what we are taught in school. Get the right answer, get the A and you will be rewarded. You will be successful. You will have everything you desire. Get wrong answers and you fail! You become a failure. You are seen as hopeless to amount to anything. Wrong! This thinking is wrong. This belief is contrary to real life. If you ask any millionaire, hell tell you that he has had plenty of failure. Failure helped him learn and grow. No one can get it right the first time. People, who wont try until they can get it right, never get anywhere. They never leave the starting line. They never really succeed. Failing and learning from your mistakes is the path to success. Millionaires encourage us to fail as fast as we can so that we can get to success faster. How does this relate to math anxiety? Math Anxiety stems from our fear of failure. But contrary to our beliefs, getting the wrong answer is more useful to learning math than getting the right answer. Doing math wrong helps us to better grasp the math concept and the process because we have to analyze our thinking. We are forced to analyze our logic that led us to the wrong answer. We learn from the failure and we do math better the next time. In time we grow in our math proficiency. Our anti-failure society is the root of math anxiety. Instead of accepting our math errors and learning from them, we get the mistaken impression that we are not good at math just because we cant get the right answer first off all the time. Getting any wrong answer is failure and is a reflection of our lack of ability. Our society equates getting the wrong answers with not being very good at something. Of course, if you are not capable, not gifted, not talented at something, you should not be doing it. This leads to the belief that you should just give up and dont try again. How many of our children wont go into the career of their choice because they dont believe they can do the math needed for that endeavor. How many of us are letting math anxiety stop us from pursuing our interest in starting a business, changing careers, going to college? In my travels this summer, I met an airline pilot, a captain and a woman. I was interested to know what it was like to be a pilot, what skills were required to fly an aircraft. She spoke of calculating fuel consumption in her head, taking into consideration the planes altitude and air speed and other parameters. I marveled at her math ability. As we spoke further, I told her about my book, 2+2=Anxiety; Overcoming Math Anxiety is as Simple as Child’s Play. She confessed to hating math. In college, she had dropped out of veterinarian school because she was afraid that the math would be more than she was capable of doing. She confessed that at home, she did not even balance her own checkbook. She had totally separated in her mind the math she did as a pilot from the math she did not do in the rest of her life. She did not see the calculation she did as a pilot as doing math. It was just a formula that she plugged numbers into. Anyone could do it. How true! Of course, my thought on hearing her fuel calculation, had been that doing that formula was beyond my abilities. Do you see the invasive mindset that is the root of the problem? We tend to think that the math is beyond our capabilities. The United State is seeing a mark decrease in the number of students pursuing math, science, and engineering degrees. The United State is losing it technological edge. Math anxiety is becoming a nation wide epidemic. Your child is just its latest victim. Dont let this happen. Change your mindset about math. Help you child change his mindset towards math. Start with doing something fun that involves doing math, like calculating the fuel consumption based on altitude, aircraft weight and airspeed. Interviewing Styles: Should You Learn Them?

By Judi Perkins There is much talk about Interviewing Styles: The Directive Interview, The Behavioral Interview, The Stress Interview, The Qualifying Interview, The This Interview, The That Interview. Articles outline different styles, list typical questions for each and tell you how to prepare for them, as well as suggesting appropriate answers. That’s all well and good, but there’s an obvious question here that begs to be asked: how do you KNOW which style you’ll encounter? When you phone to schedule the interview, do you ask, “Oh, by the way Mr. Interviewer, what interview style do you use? I’d like to study that one and ignore all the others.”? I absolutely endorse asking questions that you need to know the answers to (when it’s the appropriate time)……but THAT question is obviously an exception! So do you study all of the styles? Memorize every question that applies to each style and all the recommended answers to prepare for each one? And when the interview begins, you say to yourself, “AHA! It’s The Abstract Theoretical Look Sideways Style!” and then you know exactly what to say and do. What if you missed a style? And you find yourself saying “What the heck style is THIS? I don’t recognize it! HELP!” Which completely throws you off and you bomb the rest of the interview. Worrying about interviewing styles is ridiculous. Not only is it too much information to memorize, but it’s also a waste of time. An interview is nerve-wracking as it is without worrying about which style you’re going to encounter. The interview is about the company and how your presence will benefit them, the preparation (with the exception of your company research) is about knowing who you are and what you’re looking for. It’s not about the company or anticipating their interviewing style. Interview preparation is an absolute, non-negotiable, unequivocal must, but preparing by learning different styles is not. That’s why your interview preparation needs to be focused on learning about yourself, listing questions to ask, forming your answers to fundamental interview questions. You prepare by focusing on yourself because you are seeking your perfect job. You want to have the power to decide if you want to return for another interview instead of giving that power away. You want to be in control of your future. An interview is a sales process. The product is, essentially, you. And you need to be real about who you are, AND be prepared enough to interview well. Do THAT properly and the style you encounter is irrelevant. Interviewing is 85% prep and 15% common sense. Sometimes it does involve a bit of mirroring, but some of that is common sense. Do it without losing your individuality. For instance, if the interviewer is chatty, longer answers are okay. If the interviewer is crisp and serious, keep your answers focused and on the topic. Occasionally you’ll run into an interviewer who wants to make you sweat. You feel as if youre under a bright light – they’re grilling you, and you might as well have been fingerprinted. There’s no need to get all worked up (besides, they WANT you to). If that’s his interview style, what do you think it will be like to work for him? The answer to that should calm you down. You won’t care what he thinks, because you probably won’t want to return. Good money? Eventually you’ll hate your boss, then you’ll hate your job, then your life will be hell, because the salary won’t be worth it. Short drive? Eventually you’ll hate your boss, then you’ll hate your job then your life will be hell, because the drive will STILL be too long – you don’t want to go where you’re driving. Great advancement promised? After how long? How many people have held that position in the last 6 years? If you want to work for a control freak or someone who needs to appear tough and all-knowing, you’ve found the place. If he’s rapid firing questions at you, hoping to trip you up, let him feel important . Finish the interview and then cross the company off your list. Another interviewer might leave you thinking “What’s UP with this guy?” He seems sort of at a loss as to what to ask you. His questions are all open ended and don’t seem to have any firm direction or point. Just use common sense. You’ve done your interview prep work – jump in and sell yourself. That doesnt mean talk non-stop, but you don’t have to sit there and be uncomfortably silent for long periods of time either. Ease the awkwardness. Help him out. Lots of holes? Gracefully and professionally answer some of the questions you were prepared to answer, even though he hasn’t asked them. He may not know how to interview very well. (Face it, NO ONE – except maybe a human resources person – should have a lot of experience interviewing. If they do – they either can’t keep a job….or they can’t keep employees!) If your first interview is with human resources, often they can be crisply black and white, detail oriented, and by the book. Don’t let it throw you. If you know yourself and what you’re looking for, you’ve done your research on the company, and you’ve thoroughly prepped yourself for the interview, you’re much less likely to get flustered. Mirror their style, but don’t drown your personality. SOME human resources people are adept at giving you enough rope to hang yourself – so don’t be lulled into a warm cozy camaraderie. Watch their visual cues – which can be subtle. Follow your instinct, but follow their lead. They’re screeners, but in that sense, they are also decision makers. Don’t waste your time memorizing styles and how to handle each one. There ARE different interview styles, just as there are different types of people. The hiring authority’s interviewing style is usually a reflection of his personality. Stay aware of what’s happening at the moment, what you’re saying, what you’re learning, and how you’re feeling about what’s taking place. The more you’ve done your homework in accordance with what I’ve suggested, the more relaxed you’ll feel. The more relaxed you feel, the more confident and in control of your answers you’ll be, and the less likely you’ll be to worry about interview styles and types. When you know your background and who you are – the hows and whys and whats – you’re also less likely to be blindsided by an unexpected “type” question. So before you interview, it is imperative for you to give significant thought to: Why you chose your current field What environment you work best in and why What your personality traits are Why you liked and didn’t like your previous jobs and what you learned from them What your skills and talents are How you’ve handled diverse situations and what you might have done differently, or why what you did was effective – be able to back it up What you’ve accomplished in your previous positions and how those accomplishments contributed to the success of the department and the company In what areas you feel you need some work or polish Where you see yourself going and how you plan on getting there Why you chose to leave one company to go to the next In addition to knowing the answers to the above topics, you need to think about the most appropriate way to phrase those answers AND how they relate to what you’ve learned about the company from your research on line or at the library. In fact, some of the topics on the above list you should already have given thought to before you began your job search. If you don’t know who you are, what you want, in what circumstances you perform best and in what circumstances you don’t perform well at all, what type of management style helps you to flourish and give back to the company, and what the goal of your next job is – you won’t know what you’re looking for, much less be able to recognize it. Put effort into making sure you know who you are and what makes you that way. Know what you’ve accomplished and what contributed to those accomplishments, what motivates you and what turns you off. Spend time learning about the company with whom you’ll be interviewing. Make a list of questions to bring with you, and know what kind of answers you’re looking for. Be able to address issues by showing how who YOU are will benefit THEM. Then it won’t matter what style you encounter. You’ll be comfortable with any style you meet. When Someone You Love Tries To Hurt Themselves

By Anna Allen Has someone you love tried to hurt themselves by committing suicide? If so, how did it make you feel? I ask these questions because I can relate to them. You see, my brother attempted suicide recently. The whole ordeal really affected me. I was an emotional wreck. I had feelings of guilt and kept asking myself, what could I have done to prevent this? Maybe I could have spent more time with him instead of being so wrapped up in my life. Maybe I could have been more alert and paid more attention to the signs. Maybe I could have done a little more to help him. I was beating myself up playing the Maybe I could have game. I thank God everyday that my brothers suicide attempted failed. Hes getting the help he needs and were spending a lot more time together. Things are getting a lot better. Hes smiling and laughing again. Hes on the road to recovery. So why am I writing about something so personal and private in my life? Well, if my story helps just one person, it will all be worth it. You see, we were lucky, but unfortunately many are not. Hopefully with this article, it will help you recognize the warning signs or help you understand and deal with your feelings. First of all, what are the possible suicide warning signs to look for? Talk of suicide (even in a joking manner) Isolation Recent loss (divorce, death, job, religious faith, separation, etc.) Previous suicide attempt Change in personality or behavior Change in sleep or eating patterns Sexual problems (impotence, erectile dysfunction) Low self esteem No hope for the future Substance abuse Giving away favorite belongings Making arrangements for pets Making out a will Giving up on life So, lets ask ourselves, Why do people give up on life? Well, Im a firm believer in the fact that many of those who take their lives do not want to die as much as they want to end whatever is going on. They want the pain to stop. Although the reasons why people commit suicide can vary, certain events in life can also trigger suicide. Some of these could be: Family or relationship problems Financial or work-related problems Retirement or physical illness, especially in elderly people. Loneliness Rejection Another triggering factor of suicide (and probably the most common) has nothing to do with anything on a social level, such as a job or relationship. That triggering factor has to do with a persons brain chemistry, which, in turn, causes Depression. Depression is one of the leading causes of suicide. The thing to remember is, Depression can be treated successfully. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness can be reversed. Millions of people everyday cope with the problems and stresses of this world, so that nothing new. Its the way a persons mind and heart react to the pressures that lead some to kill themselves. So when the underlying factors are dealt with, many people react differently to the problems and stresses that can trigger suicide. Its important to realize that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. One expert described it by saying, Committing suicide is like treating a cold with a nuclear bomb. Suicide is never justified. I feel I have to mention the fact that sometimes its only easy to recognize signs of suicidal feelings after the fact. The present is a different story. Many times this is because its almost impossible to know what another person is thinking and feeling. Were not mind readers and it doesnt help when many suicidal people just dont open up and talk about their innermost feelings to others, even to close family and friends. That was the case with my brother. He is a very quiet person who rarely spoke of his problems or things that bothered him. So how can family, friends or others help? Well, first of all remember that all suicide attempts should be treated seriously. There is no room for error. Studies have shown that 20-30% of people who attempted suicide will repeat their attempt with a year. The study goes on to show that more than 50% of suicides (in the United States) occur in people who have had no contact with a mental health professional. So as mentioned earlier, there is help available. Your condition can be helped. No situation is hopeless. Another way that family and friends can help is to remember that sometimes an attempted suicide is a cry for help. So naturally family members and friends want to do and say the right thing to the one who has lost hope. One of the main things to remember is not to patronize them. They know what they did and why they did it, so they dont need to be babied. Also, it will not help to use expressions like: Get over it, A lot of people are worse off than you, Stop feeling sorry for yourself and Snap out of it. Instead, try to be there for them. Be a good listener and listen to whatever they have to say. Be a real friend to them. Stress to them that even though you cannot fully understand how bad they feel, the experience of others is proof things will get better. In the case of my brother, my family all gathered together and discussed how wed go about helping him. We made time for him and showed him how much we loved him. Dont get me wrong, there were mistakes along the way. There were some that patronized him and treated him like a porcelain doll. Some seemed to be walking around on egg shells around him. He didnt need that. My brother told me how bad that made him feel. Thats how I knew what to write in this article. All this experience has brought my brother and I closer than ever. I thank God he is getting well. The best advice I can give anyone out there who has gone through anything similar to my experience is to try to help their loved one by showing them that life, which should be their most prized possession, is worth living. In conclusion, if Someone You Love Tries to Hurt Themselves, remember, its not your fault. Stop beating yourself or blaming yourself. Get them the help they need. Be there for them. Being Coy Does Not Get You The Boy

By David Wygant When I sat down to write my new book, I had one thing in mindto get men and women back on the same page when it came to meeting each other. As a dating agent who actually works with men and women on a daily basis, as opposed the inexperienced authors of chick lit that have become bestsellers, nothing frustrates me more than hearing women talk about the mind games they think they must play to get a mans attention. Women, let this article serve as a wakeup call. There is no mind game, rule, or trick that can make a man truly fall for you. Youve been sold a bill of goods! In famous books some of the authors espouse the coy technique, i.e., the more you act like you dont care about a guy, the more hell fall for you. Is it true? The answera resounding no. So why does this technique seem to work so often? The reasonmen are not falling in love with you, theyre falling in love with your unavailability. Most people are attracted to things they cant have. If someone acts like they dont need you or want you, or that they are unattainable, suddenly they become a challenge. This is Psychology 101. Think about it. How much would you love the guy you have a crush on if instead of him being a challenge, he was staring at you all day, enamored, completely at your beckon call, worshiping your every word and move. Might be fun for a while, but eventually youd lose interest in him? The problem for most women who use the coy technique comes when you they can longer keep up the emotionally unavailable charade. At some point they have to let down their guard, be themselves, become vulnerable, and see if the man accepts them for who they are or see if he heads for the door. Most of the time if a man is not ready for a relationship, or a woman is no longer emotionally unavailable, hes heading for the door. Contrary to popular belief, men are not one dimensional creatures. Most men dont simply sit around with their friends grunting and burping like Neanderthals. As a matter of fact, youd probably be surprised to know that most men talk very openly with their friends about their feelings toward women, about love, and about their emotions. In addition, most men are very aware of their own issues with intimacy and commitment, and most of the time they know when they are ready to confront these issues, and make a go of it with a woman. Ladies, here is what you need to know, and all you will ever need to know if youre going to have a meaningful substantive relationship with any man. First, you must have good conversation, must enjoy each others company, and must connect on a spiritual and intellectual level. Second, you must have physical attraction. Attraction is subjective and it cant be forced, no matter what your other dating book says. Third, both of you must be ready to attempt intimacy and commitment with one another. For both men and women, this comes at different times in life. Some people are ready for long term intimacy and commitment at eighteen, some at forty-eight, and some are never capable of it, or are simply not willing to do the work that it takes to achieve it. Fourth, you both must be willing to accept that love is not just about being hot and bothered for one another. In all relationships where two people are both emotionally and physically available to one another, initial feelings of passionate lust eventually wear off. This happens at different times depending on the couple. When this happens, you begin to regain part of your identity and its at this point where the real work of a relationship begins. Often, this work is called love. Stop looking for easy answers to lifes most complex and challenging issues. There is no mind game that will bring you real satisfaction and a lifetime of fulfillment. Instead of trying to figure out ways to manipulate men into loving you, spend time becoming the best person you can be and get proactive with your dating life. Meet as many men as possible until you find a natural meaningful connection with someone who is also willing to make a real attempt at intimacy and commitment. Believe me, they are out there. However, this much I guaranteeas long as you stereotype men and underestimate their intelligence and their complexity, you will never find a meaningful experience with one. And as long as you continue to buy into pop theories of attraction, you will continually be chasing your own tail.
